LANOLIN CREAM BENEFITS

LANOLIN CREAM BENEFITS

Introduction

Lanolin is another name for wool fat or wool grease, derived by extracting and processing of the wool shorn from domestic sheep. The reason sheep have lanolin is because of its water-proofing properties. It keeps the sheep's internal body moisture in and at the same time, external moisture out. Great for rainy weather as it keeps the integrity of the wool, prevents the wool from getting wet and soggy to keep the sheep warm. But from a human's point of view, lanolin has rich emollient properties which has definite advantages in skin care as we will discuss later.

Hydrating Power of Lanolin Cream

Lanolin cream is a very hydrating emollient and works to keep the skin's moisture from evaporating, giving skin its suppleness and elasticity. This is great for people who suffer from dry skin (xerosis, for those who are scientifically minded) or are exposed to environmental factors that will dehydrate the skin. Examples of this can include harsh wind and frequent air-conditioning. This is applicable to dry, arid countries as well as humid countries where air-conditioning is used for long periods of the day and night. It provides a barrier to prevent water loss because dry skin will lead to other problems such as faster ageing, dermatitis, slower healing and stretch marks.

Some areas that are more prone to dryness such as elbows, knees, cracked heels, feet and hands and cracked nipples from breastfeeding mums can benefit from its moisturizing properties. Even people with skin conditions due to dry skin such as dermatitis/eczema can benefit when it is used as part of their skin maintenance regime in conjunction with any prescribed medications. Research has shown that the use of pure lanolin applied 2 times a day for 4 weeks has been effective in treating severe foot xerosis (really dry feet). We all know how dry and neglected our feet are and so this evidence demonstrates that powerful hydrating properties of lanolin cream.

Conclusion

Lanolin cream has been around for years and is used in moisturizers to provide protection and hydrate the skin. The moisture on the skin is important to maintain optimal conditions because as we all know, dry skin is the cornerstone to many skin problems. Therefore, it is very beneficial for dry skin and can be used in many environmental conditions from dry, arid places to humid countries. So lanolin cream can be versatile and should be part of your daily skin care regime.
